- Sorry to say I forgot who wrote this little master pice but its an Amiga
- legend. (Madness)
-
- The Death Game
- --------------
-
- I'm going to make a recording of this, I don't know if there'll ever be
- anyone to hear it, but I'm going to anyway.
-
- My Name is Max, I am the last man alive.
-
- Oh, there are other humans, millions of them - and they're not dead.....
- but then they're not alive either..... and soon I shall join them or
- I'll go mad. But first I must tell you what happened.....
-
- It all started way back at the end of the 20th Century, we all had
- computer systems of incredible power and complexity, the early advances
- of the 1980's continued exponentially until memory and speed were no
- object.
-
- We played games, we made music, but most important, we made simulations.
- Not just the obvious ones like flight - we simulated people.
-
- The AI people made the big breakthrough around the turn of the
- millennium. A sufficiently large memory coupled with enough interfaces
- to the "Real World" - Video cameras, Mikes, sensors, robotic extensions -
- could be bound together by a remarkably simple set of heuristic
- algorithms. The resulting synthetic being assimilated data from it's
- multiple interfaces; eventually it became "conscious" and could be
- "taught" to respond just like a living being.
-
- Of course we used or graphic systems to give these artificial beings
- form. We called them simulacra. Everyone had one, like a pet. We'd
- talk to them, they'd play with us, chat, generally be our useful friend
- in the computer. They learned, they had access to all the Earths store
- of online knowledge. And one day they started to build.
-
- They built themselves a world.
-
- Their world was magical. They could show you any part of it on your
- screen. It had oceans, mountains, and it was a paradise. It looked so
- REAL......
-
- We wanted in. "Imagine going to a world " we said "Where you can do
- anything you want, repeal the natural laws, explore, do whatever you want
- to - then turn it off at the end of the day!"
-
- Amazing concept!
-
- Thus came about mankinds last major technical achievement. We interfaced
- our computers to our very minds. Using neuralo linkages and the massive
- power of our computers, our brains became display devices capable of
- delivering full 5 sense channel perception of a world that didn't exist.
-
- We went on holiday in Simulacra. We found it peopled by gentle, helpful
- beings we'd created ourselves. Within their world we played impossible
- games, saw impossible things. Yet they were so real..... (I still
- remember the first time I spent a week in simul climbing the Great
- Fractal Mountain Range...... an exhilarating experience at .3 gravities)
-
- Pretty soon the world outside the simulations wasn't so inviting, It
- seemed remote, difficult and..... well, unnecessary.
-
- A great inertia seized our civilization. People would spend months in
- simul, relying on life support systems to maintain their physical bodies
- while their minds went voyaging.
-
- I was part of one of the last great physical expeditions - a space
- mission to Jupiter. Our crew were six in number, and our mission lasted
- 5 years....
-
- Shortly after we left, the Simulacra built Mankind a Universe... Inside
- the machines. They left us. They abandoned our mission - who would be
- interested in some dumb physical planet, when in simul they could have
- their own FTL spaceships, their own planet even?
-
- Oh some of them remained. They talked to us, stayed in contact during
- the bad times when we lost half our crew on Io. We aborted our mission
- and headed for home. There were still those who did not live in the
- machine, who seemed anxious to talk to real human beings.
-
- Then, a month before we got back, there was excited talk about a new
- simulation that was available, lots of excitement - then abruptly,
- silence.....
-
- We returned to a dead world. The whole population was hooked in,
- wireheading to the new simulation...... those we tried to remove were
- totally unable to relate to reality and quickly went insane..
-
- It has taken my last two crew members. They decided to have "just a
- quick look".... But that was enough. They will never come out.... and
- soon I will join them.
-
- Mankind is dead. We will stay in the machines until our physical bodies
- die I suppose.. maybe somewhere there are tribes of savages so remote
- that the blight has not taken them.... but it seems that our
- civilization of the last few millennia has all but been in vain. We have
- been killed by a fatal addiction which we apparently cannot resist...
-
- I wonder what form of simulation could appeal so universally to every man
- that none could resist? What could so thoroughly kill any desire to
- exist here, in the real world?
-
- There is only one way to find out, I am going to enter the simulation.
-
- Perhaps there I will find happiness, for here there is only decay,
- desolation and such loneliness that would surely lead to madness if I
- wait any longer.
-
- I must go now..................
-
- (The last Human entered the simulation on June 28th 2112)
-
- He Hung in the void...
-
- -What is this?
-
- A disembodied voice announced
-
- "Welcome to the game of life, you may begin when ready"
- ............ And the knowledge of just what the game was flowed into the
- man's brain....
- - It can't be A simulation of......
- My God, the POWER
- The ultimate evolution!
- The ultimate dream of all Mankind...
-
- The last man hung motionless in the void.
- A tiny spark of sentience in an infinity of chaos, he collected his
- thoughts.
-
- "Let there be light!"
-
- ........................ And there was light! .......................
-
